Proposed transport council will help resolve taxi issues - Santaco
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) believes the proposed Transport Council will help resolve issues facing the taxi industry.
President Cyril Ramaphosa opened the inaugural National Transport Conference in Midrand on Monday, where he floated the idea of establishing a council.
It will bring together the government and the private sector across all the transport modes of land, air and sea.c
Ramaphosa told delegates that the transport council should be modelled on the country’s experience with the energy council.
“Just as collaboration transformed our energy response, cross-sector collaboration of this kind will enable further stabilisation and inclusive growth in transport,” Ramaphosa said.
The taxi industry has welcomed the proposal, saying it will help address issues between taxi operators, e-hailing services, and scholar transport.
Last year, the government had to intervene after an e-hailing driver was killed in Soweto amid tensions between taxi operators and e-hailing drivers.
"The taxi industry, metre taxis, scholar transport and cross-border operators, I can confirm that we are one now,” said Santaco President Abnar Tsebe.
"We have delegates that are representing those sectors; they are now part of the National Executive Committee with Santaco.”
Tsebe said the council will help accelerate the transformation of the taxi industry and ensure that taxi drivers have Unemployment Insurance Fund coverage and receive written contracts.
The conference will run until Wednesday.
