"Transport Minister Ms Dipuo Peters has met with MECs responsible for roads, transport and community safety to consider several matters within the transport sphere," said spokesman Sam Monareng in a statement.

CEOs of transport entities, provincial heads of departments and members of the South African Local Government Association (Salga) also attended the meeting.

Issues discussed at the meeting were learner transport, the road accident benefit scheme, October transport month, and the regulation and standardisation of registration plates.

"The meeting agreed that the national department of transport should go ahead and present the draft scholar/learner transport policy to Cabinet," said Monareng.

The new policy would introduce regulations governing safety and vehicle specifications for the transportation of schoolchildren.

Monareng said a public consultation process would soon be introduced for the road accident benefit scheme (RABS).

"The primary aims of RABS is to put in place a reasonable, equitable, affordable and sustainable system of road crash benefits."

The scheme would move from a fault-based system to a no fault-based system.

Transport month in October would see the minister and her deputy visiting various provinces to discuss transport infrastructure and services, Monareng said.

The meeting agreed on the need for uniformity and standardisation in vehicle registration plates across all provinces.

"The process would also address the issue of security to curb incidents of vehicle cloning."
