Trevor Noah mourns the death of his Gogo - 'I’ve cried all week'

Trevor Noah paid tribute to his grandmother, Frances Noah, on Thursday following her death at the age of 95. 'The Daily Show' host revealed that his Gogo "passed away peacefully in her sleep".

"This morning our family laid to rest the oldest member of our clan Frances Noah, or as most of us referred to her, Gogo," he wrote on Instagram. 

Despite her age, Trevor says his grandmother had the best memory and every moment spent with her felt like a "magical journey through time". 

"... she would recount all of the family’s greatest joys, losses, achievements and milestones. Her house in Soweto wasn’t just a home, it was a refuge, a place where other women would come when they had no other place to go, a place where members of the community would gather to pray together every single week, a place where everyone was guaranteed to feel the love emanating from her mighty chest," the 38-year-old added.

Trevor says his life with his Gogo felt like a movie. 

"I’ve cried all week celebrating the greatest “movie” I’ve ever watched. A story that began with my first breath and ended with her last. A woman who showed me the truest definition of unconditional love. She passed away peacefully in her sleep and even blessed us with one final Mother’s Day which she enjoyed to the fullest."

Trevor opened up about his life in Soweto with his mother, Patricia, and his grandmother in his New York Times bestseller, 'Born A Crime'. 

"Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison," Penguin Random House described the book. 

Trevor's Gogo was also featured on a segment for 'The Daily Show'. He visited his childhood home in 2018 and chatted about their life during apartheid.

During the segment, his Gogo revealed that she looks at a photograph of him every morning. 

"... every morning when I look at it, 'Morning, Trevor, and he never answers," she joked.
