The High Court in Johannesburg concluded the pre-trial conference in the matter, which includes assault charges relating to the couple’s three-year-old son.
On 6 August 2025, the girl was allegedly brutally assaulted and sexually abused by the 32-year-old biological father while her mother was at work.
It’s alleged that the father physically assaulted her repeatedly, attempted to drown her in a bathtub, and sexually assaulted her with an object.
Neighbours were reportedly alerted by the child’s agonising screams and alerted the police.
“The police arrived and found the unconscious child on a bed with visible head injuries, bruises, and a swollen eye. The father was arrested on the scene, and the girl was rushed to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The father faces charges including murder, rape, compelled rape, child abuse, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,” said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Magabokoe Mohlatlole.
It’s further alleged that the man had assaulted his son four months earlier.
The mother faces charges including failure to report sexual offences, child abuse, murder, and defeating the ends of justice, after allegedly noticing the injuries, suspecting abuse, and failing to report it.
The identities of the accused and the deceased cannot be disclosed to protect the surviving minor victim.
The pair, who will remain in custody, will return to court on 27 July when their trial is set to begin.
