Political parties are mourning the passing of former minister of public enterprises Pravin Gordhan.
Various political parties, such as the African National Congress, Rise Mzansi, and ActionSA, have conveyed their condolences to the Gordhan family following Pravin Gordhan's passing in the early hours of Friday morning.
Gordhan passed away in the early hours of Friday morning at the age of 75, following a short battle against cancer.
Gordhan has been hospitalised, his family confirmed on Tuesday.
The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has described Gordhan as a person who was loved by the province.
"Comrade Pravin leaves behind an indelible legacy. His wisdom, courage, and selfless dedication to the people of South Africa will never be forgotten", the statement read.
"He was a respected, beloved son of this province, a veteran of our movement, and a stalwart in the struggle for our nation’s freedom.
"During this time of immense grief, our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones, comrades, and all whose lives he touched. We mourn alongside the entire nation as we come to terms with the loss of one of our finest leaders.
"Let us honour his memory by continuing to uphold the values he so fiercely defended in service to our country and its people."
The party has also cancelled its prayer service that was scheduled for Friday evening in light of Gordhan.
The ActionSA has praised the work done by Gordhan during his tenure as the finance minister.
"A longstanding public servant, his contribution to South Africa's political and economic landscape over five decades was considerable,” said ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba.
"During his tenure as Minister of Finance, Gordhan was known for his firm stance on fiscal discipline and his fight against corruption, notably standing against the forces of state capture."
Meanwhile, RISE Mzansi leader Songezo Zibi described Gordhan as one of the first brave voices to stand up against state capture and mobilised support within and outside Parliament.
"We rise to commemorate a life well lived in service of South Africa and its people.
"On behalf of RISE Mzansi, I wish to convey heartfelt condolences to the Gordhan family, his
loved ones and friends as well as his political home, the ANC."
