Tshwane denies DA’s claims over deputy mayor’s municipal debt

The City of Tshwane has confirmed that newly elected Deputy Mayor Eugene Modise has no outstanding debts on his municipal accounts.

The statement came in response to allegations from the DA, which claimed that Modise, who also serves as MMCA for Finance, owed the municipality R690,000.
In a statement released shortly after Modise was elected, DA Tshwane caucus chairperson Jacqui Uys claimed that he had an overdue municipal debt of over half a million rand.
"Yesterday, I met with councillor Modise to do a handover report in respect of the Group Finance Department to enable him to fulfill his work as member of the mayoral committee for the portfolio concerned.
“The key to improving service delivery and the rollout of infrastructure in the City of Tshwane is to improve the city’s financial position.”
Uys said the city's financial recovery relies on vigorous credit control as well as the disconnection of illegal water and electricity connections.
“Without a culture of payment the city will be financially unsustainable in the medium term and it is essential that members of the mayoral committee not owe arrear debt to the city, or at least if they do, that they make payment arrangements. Leaders must set the example," said Uys.
But, the city spokesperson Selby Bokaba clarified that all Modise’s accounts are up to date.
"While it is against the law to disclose personal municipal account of individuals, we will make an exception on this one.
“Finance MMC Cllr Eugene Modise’s accounts are all current, and others have credit. He doesn’t owe the city a cent, instead he has paid upfront and has a credit on two of his municipal accounts," said Bokaba.
