Tshwane unrest death toll rises to five
The death toll in the Tshwane unrest has increased to five after two bodies were found in the City Central Shopping Centre in Mabopane Thursday morning.
Violence and looting continued in the area overnight.
Tshwane Metro Police spokesperson Console Tleane said the cause of death is not yet known.
"It does appear that one was [due] to gun shots and the other on is [due to] a suspected stampede," Tleane said.
Tleane said the situation has calmed down, but it is still not safe enough to send in workers to clear the streets of debris and empty dustbins.
"The challenge that is also there is Mamelodi, because we had attempted to start moving out the burnt wreckages of the buses, but there was some kind of unexpected resistance from some of the crowd and our workers had to withdraw," he said.
Two people were killed in Mamelodi on Tuesday evening while a member of the ANC was shot and killed on Sunday evening in the west if Pretoria.
The unrest started in the run up to the ANC's announcement on Monday that Thoko Didiza would stand as the party's mayoral candidate for Tshwane.
