Tshwane warns of prolonged outages amid stage 6 load shedding
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The City of Tshwane has warned residents of possible prolonged power cuts due to networking overloading, as well as infrastructure theft and vandalism.
Eskom implemented stage 6 load shedding until further notice on Wednesday due to breakdowns at several power stations and the need to conserve diesel supplies.
The city’s MMC for Utilities Daryl Johnston says stage 6 load shedding will likely result in criminals targeting infrastructure, including cables.
"It is important for residents to note that load shedding can result in additional outages due to high surges and overloading of the network, as well as vandalism and theft of City of Tshwane infrastructure.
"Furthermore, as the frequency of load shedding increases, city resources will be stretched as our teams have to be deployed across Tshwane to implement load shedding, as directed by Eskom.
"The heavy rains we have experienced recently also make this situation worse, with wet weather increasing the likelihood of equipment faults."
