Tshwane residents urged to stay alert for severe thunderstorms
Updated | By Lebohang Ndashe
The City of Tshwane has appealed to its residents to remain alert following severe thunderstorms warning by the South African Weather Services (SAWS).
The weather services issued a Yellow level 2 warning for today.
Last month, the capital experience power supply interruption as the K3 Substation Rosslyn was damaged due to inclement weather conditions.
Tshwane’s Emergency Management (EMS) spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni says the city’s safety management team remains on high alert.
“We call on communities to observe safety measures such as, if possible, stay indoors and avoid metal objects, do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects, avoid crossing low-laying routes, bridges and streams,” adds Mnguni.
The impact of the forecasted severe thunderstorm may lead to localised flooding of susceptible low-lying areas, informal settlements and susceptible roads.
Minor to major vehicle accidents could also be possible due to poor driving visibility and slippery road conditions.
Residents are encouraged to monitor the warnings and alerts issued by the (SAWS) and other credible sources, and to immediately follow the recommended safety tips.
“We further call on residents to be vigilant and to immediately report any fire or rescue,” concludes Mnguni.
