Police in Gauteng have arrested twelve people for employing undocumented workers, and shut down four warehouses trading in illicit and expired food.
The operation, conducted on Thursday, was spearheaded by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) Priority Committee on Food-borne Illness and Illicit Trade.
Officials from the police, as well as the Departments of Home Affairs, Labour, and Health, led the operation targeting unsafe consumables.
Expired items and large consignments of illicit goods were seized, and business owners were fined for regulatory breaches.
Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk says a large number of expired goods were seized.
"Two business owners were fined for employing these undocumented foreign nationals. Fines and notices were also issued for non-compliance to health and safety regulations.
"The team closed down four warehouses and seized a large consignment of illicit goods and expired consumables," Van Wyk added.
