Twelve dead, scores injured in N1 bus crash in Free State
Twelve people have been killed and more than 60 others injured in a tragic bus accident on the N1 between Trompsburg and Edenburg in the Free State.
The provincial Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport says the crash occurred at approximately 21:30 on Thursday when a bus towing a trailer, reportedly travelling to Zimbabwe, lost control and overturned.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene where a major rescue operation unfolded overnight.
A total of 65 injured passengers were transported to Albert Nzula Hospital, while one patient was taken to the Pelonomi Hospital Trauma Unit.
Authorities confirmed that four people sustained minor injuries, while 62 were left seriously injured.
Free State MEC for Community Safety, Jabu Mbalula, has conveyed condolences to the families of the victims, describing the incident as a devastating loss.
"On behalf of the Free State Provincial Government, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragic accident. To those injured, we wish you a speedy and full recovery. This is a devastating loss, and our thoughts are with all those affected."
The department has commended the coordinated response by law enforcement agencies, emergency medical services and disaster management teams, who worked through the night to assist victims.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Authorities have urged motorists, particularly long-distance public transport operators, to exercise caution, comply with road safety regulations and ensure vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.
The department has also reminded drivers to avoid fatigue, obey speed limits and refrain from risky behaviour that could endanger lives.
