It is believed the two victims, Sanny Valtyn Kekana and Ralf Kanyane, were ambushed by an unknown gunman who opened fire on them while the two were sitting in a vehicle in the town of Mokopane.

They victims died on the scene.

Kekana was a Chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee in the Mogalakwena Municipality, while Kanyane was a branch secretary of the ward ten branch of the Mogalakwena Sub Region.

The governing party's Provincial Secretary, Soviet Lekganyane, described the two deceased as "finest" members of the ANC among their ranks.

"We have observed in the past 12 months a shocking increase in the shooting and killing of our members, making it difficult for us not to believe the political nature of the motives," said Lekganyane in a statement.

The police in the province are investigating two counts of murder.

Limpopo police spokesperson, Motlafela Mojapelo, says the suspect allegedly fled on foot.

The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage, and police investigations are continuing.
