Two eThekwini municipal officials nabbed for fraud and corruption

The Hawks arrested nine suspects in Durban on Tuesday on allegations of corruption and fraud.
Two of the suspects are officials at the eThekwini municipality, while the other seven are service providers at the municipality.
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi says the suspects were allegedly given an illegal tender of R208 million in 2016, which formed part of Durban’s solid waste project.
"Investigations were then conducted based on a tip-off received, which led to the arrest of the nine suspects. It is claimed the service providers were paid huge amounts of monies even though they did not render any service," says Mulaudzi.
The nine suspects appeared at the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Tuesday.
Five of the suspects were granted R50 000 bail each while another one was granted R30 000 bail.
The three remaining suspects, including the two officials, are expected to appear at the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Thursday after they were denied bail at their court appearance on Tuesday.
