Two more arrested for attack on US students

Gauteng police say two more suspects have been arrested in connection with the robbing of 19 international students and two professors in Mamelodi earlier this month.

The internation group with students from America was visiting the viva Foundation School in Mamelodi East as part of an outreach programme. 


The students and two professors were attacked by a group of five armed robbers in broad daylight.


The were robbed of their belongings, including cell phones, passparts, flight tickets and US dollars. 


The gang fled te scene in a Toyota Quantum after also wounding a member of the public during a shooting, and assaulting a school employee. 


A day after the incident, a 30-year-old male suspect was arrested at the Pienaarspoort informal settlement in Mamelodi East.


He has since appeared in the Mamelodi Magistrate's Court on charges of robbery, attempted murder, and assault. 


Police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters says the second suspect was arrested in Limpopo on Friday, while the third was nabbed by police in Mpumalanga on Saturday. 


"A day after the incident, intelligence-led the team of investigators to a car-wash spot in Phase 3, Mamelodi East where a Toyota Quantum matching the description of the one used during the robbery, was found.


"The vehicle was processed, leading to the discovery of crucial evidence through which police were able to confirm that the taxi had been used during the commission of the armed robbery, " Peters said.


Peters adds that the police investigation continues for more suspects.
