Gauteng police have arrested two suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Lawley, Ennerdale.
Police recovered three AK-47 rifles, one 9mm pistol, and scores of ammunition on Thursday.
Acting on intelligence, police found the suspects, who are foreign nationals, at a property in Lawley Ext2.
Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the recovered firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they may have been used in other crimes.
"Two foreign nationals were found with the firearms and were arrested." she said
The suspects are expected to appear before the court on Monday.
During the release of the crime statistics earlier this month, Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni said the police would intensify their efforts to combat the proliferation of illegal firearms.
According to Police, 4,023 cases of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition were registered in the last quarter, reflecting an increase compared with the same period the previous year.
