Two people arrested for mass shooting in Khayelitsha

Four people, including minors aged between five and 12, were shot dead in Site C on Saturday.

The police say a group of gunmen entered a barber shop and opened fire on the occupants.

Police spokesperson Novela Potelwa says the pair will appear in the local magistrate’s court this Friday.

“Western Cape Serious Violent Crime detectives have been hard at work following a shooting incident that was perpetrated by gunmen at a barber shop on Saturday afternoon in Qwarha Street in Site C, Khayelitsha.

“Three children aged five, 11 and 12, as well as a 30-year-old man, died from the shooting and seven others were seriously injured. Two other individuals were unharmed. The suspects, aged 24 and 28, are facing murder and attempted murder charges and will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Friday.”

The high crime levels in the township have now also affected service delivery.

Eskom has temporarily suspended operations in e-Ndlovini after their teams were attacked.

The technicians were targeted by armed men on Sunday.

They managed to escape, but their vehicle was left damaged.

Eskom spokesperson Kyle Cookson says they had to withdraw their workers from the dangerous situation.

“This disruption will cause delays in service delivery, potentially leading to extended periods without electricity for customers. Eskom will collaborate with local authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly before determining when services can resume. Eskom strongly condemns violence, emphasising the safety of its employees as the utmost priority.”
