Two Riverlea pupils killed in school shooting
The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that two Grade 8 pupils from Riverlea Secondary School in Johannesburg were shot dead on Wednesday.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting is being investigated by police.
Social workers have been dispatched to the school to provide trauma counselling to pupils, teachers, and staff members.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has conveyed his condolences to the families and the school community.
“The department condemns all forms of violence and criminal activity that threaten the safety and well being of learners in our communities,” he said.
"This tragic event underscores the urgent need for collective action to curb gun violence and safeguard our children’s right to learn and grow in safe environments.”
