The top-ranking university proposed the policy earlier this month.

Following the announcement, the UCT Senate took to a vote on Wednesday.

“Senate, having considered this complex matter fully and taken into consideration a range of views at the meeting, proceeded to conduct voting on the matter via electronic ballot,” said UCT spokesperson Elijah Moholola.

More than 80% voted for the policy.

If approved, the university will be the first to make the Covid-19 jabs mandatory.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) and employee union have also begun a survey of the views of students and staff.

UCT management is still expected to engage in high-level discussions with other stakeholders.

“UCT emphasises that no decision or position has been taken yet by the university on mandatory vaccination on campus. Any final decision on a matter of policy for the university will have to be a decision of the university council.

“If taken forward, any decision on the proposal will ultimately be made by council as the university’s highest decision-making body. Council will consider the proposal thoroughly before coming to any decision,” Moholola added.
