Unemployment among white people low but ‘creeping in’, says Stats SA

Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke says unemployment among white South Africans is showing an upward curve.
Maluleke made the remarks at the release of the Inequality Trends report in Tshwane on Thursday.
Although unemployment in the white population group is growing, it is still at a lower rate compared to other race groups.

"In 2008, the unemployment rate for whites in South Africa was 5%,which generally would have meant in international standards that whites were not necessarily unemployed.
"As we look over time, unemployment is cripping in amongst the white population group, albeit at lower rates to other population groups in the country," said Maluleke.
The black population group continues to struggle with unemployment, with the group sitting at 31%, followed by coloureds (23.5%) and Indians at 11.6%.
Only 6.7% of white South Africans are unemployed.
