The organisation released its annual HIV/Aids report on Wednesday, but also took the time to address the issue of gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa.

It comes on the same day as the start of the South African government’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign.

Unicef's Dr Chewe Luo says the organisation is working with the South African government.

“What is happening again, through our efforts with the Department of Health and the national AIDS council in South Africa, the country has prioritised women especially young girls and women in their efforts and with the lot help of government itself.

“I am aware that the global fund has quite a lot of resources and violence is one core pillar in the South African response. We are all working towards getting to that point where there will be less violence against women, especially young girls. It’s a collective effort and media can do more in drawing attention to this and we can work better together.”
