Union seeks meeting with Limpopo MEC over safety at hospitals
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa)
in Limpopo wants to have an urgent meeting with Health MEC, Phophi Ramathuba,
following a shooting at the Polokwane Provincial Hospital on Friday.
This comes after a patient was transported by ambulance from Venda to Polokwane Provincial Hospital for medical treatment and on took out a firearm and randomly fired shots within the ward.
According to Limpopo Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe, a male nurse was shot several times; however, survived the incident.
Ngoepe adds after the male nurse was attacked, another gunshot was heard and the patient was found on the floor of the ward in a pool of blood and the firearm lying next to his body.
Police are investigating an attempted murder and inquest cases.
Denosa's chairperson in the province, Lesiba Monyatsi, says the union is concerned over the safety of staff members at the hospital.
Monyatsi adds the union is adamant about meeting with Ramathuba to pave a way forward following several shooting incidents at hospitals.
"Really our security is not tight as expected, and our workers are not working freely," says Monyatsi.
