Unions: Thousands down tools in 10111 strike
Updated | By Samkelo Maseko
The South African Trade Union Federation (SAFTU) has thrown its weight behind 5-thousand call centre operators who are on strike.
SAFTU briefed the media alongside the South African Policing Union (SAPU).
Workers at the emergency call centres want their salary levels adjusted.
SAPU General Secretary, Oscar Skommere, says efforts to reach an agreement have been unsuccessful.
"We have escalated the matter and asked the CCMA to get involved. We have done everything we believe we could to try and engage the employer. The notice we sent assured them we are open to engage with them," says Skommere.
SAFTU's second Deputy President, Thabo Matsose says SAPU is working hard.
"As a Union, they have been patient. There has been a march to the ministers' office and now the CCMA is on board. As a federation we are fully behind them because we strongly believe they have taken enough time to follow correct processes. We want to urge all SAPS members to support this strike," says Matsotse.
SAPS spokesperson Sally de Beer says contingency plans have been put in place to ensure services are not disrupted.
