Unisa students unhappy at rescheduling of exams
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
Students at Unisa will have to write the mid-year earlier than usual due to the elections in May.
Unisa students at the university’s Sunnyside and main campuses in Pretoria took to the streets on Monday to protest against the rescheduling of the exams as well as issues around the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas).
Spokesperson Martin Ramotshela says the university’s exam venues across the country will be used by the Independent Electoral Commission.
“The university issued a notice to students about four weeks ago, stating that the May-June exams for 2019 will start earlier than usual.”
Ramotshela says the IEC needs to access the venues ahead of time to set up for the May 8 polls.
The university has provided an alternative solution to students who feel they are not ready to write exams earlier.
“There will be a second opportunity to write exams in August,” says Ramotshela, adding that Unisa will engage with students to try and find a solution to some of the issues raised.
“Students are gathered outside one of the buildings at the main campus and are demanding engagement with the vice-chancellor.”
