Unit 4 at Kusile enters commercial operation

Unit 4 at Kusile in Mpumalanga has been handed over to Eskom’s generation division to start supplying power to the national grid.
The unit will add a much-needed 800MW to the national grid
The announcement comes as the country continues to face rolling blackouts due to a lack of generating power.
The troubled power plant, which Eskom began building in 2008, was expected to be completed in 2014 but has faced various delays due to design flaws and corruption throughout the construction stages.
The project is now expected to be fully completed by 2025.
Eskom Group Executive for Capital Projects Bheki Nxumalo says the handover followed five months of testing and optimisation.
“This milestone means the construction of four out of the six-generation units have now been completed at the Kusile Power Station project.
“The Kusile project team and Eskom are working tirelessly to complete the rest of the project without any further delays as the country needs every megawatt of power it can get,” says Nxumalo.
“At completion, the station will consist of six units which are expected to produce a maximum 4 800MW.”
