Vaal Dam officially full
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The persistent heavy rains in Gauteng and the rest of the country has led to the Vaal Dam officially reaching 100% capacity on Monday afternoon.
This is the first time since 2018 that the dam has reached the 100% mark.
This time last year the dam was at 57% while in December the dam was only 25% full.
Water and Sanitation spokesperson Sputnik Ratau says the heavy rains in the past weeks had a positive impact on the Integrated Vaal River System.
“The rain that South Africa has received over the last two weeks have increased the recharge of our systems throughout the country, but mainly we have seen the biggest system in the country, the Integrated Vaal River System, continues to recharge and rise.
“We can see as an example with the Vaal Dam reaching 100% at 5 pm on Monday. This has not happened in the last two or three years due to the unavailability of good rain in that period, but we are now in a place where we can see that we have a good rain we are still going to see more over the next weeks until end of March," says Ratau.
