Updated | By Eva Chipa
With coalition talks coming to end and councils needing to elect their
members, the City of Johannesburg council has elected the Democratic Alliance’s
Vasco Da Gama as speaker of council.
The elections for speaker occurred between Da Gama and the councilor for the African National Congress Eunice Sibongile Mgcina.
Acting city manager Floyd Brink announced that from the total 266 votes casted Da Gama won 147.
“The results are as follows councilor Da Gama 147, councilor Mgcina 118, number of spoiled votes is 1, total votes cast 266.”
With Da Gama now in place, he will now be presiding over the election of the mayor for Johannesburg.
The city waits with bated breath as the true coalition battle begins for the newly elected mayor for the next five years between the DA’s Mpho Phalatse and ANC’s Mpho Moerane.
