Vavi: Cosatu more divided than before
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
Former Cosatu General Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi says the trade union federation is more divided than it was before the two day Special National Congress.
Cosatu held its Special National Congress on 13 and 14 July under the banner "Building Unity and Cohesion to advance National Democratic Revolution".
Vavi says he sees more divisions after this congress.
"The congress was meant to heal the rifts and divisions, and create a coherent and united federation. A day after the congress I see more divisions and possibilities of splinters and a more paralysed Cosatu," he says.
Vavi says the fact that the debate on his and Numsa's exit was blocked failed the workers.
"Anybody who had the interest of workers at heart would know that the best way to heal Cosatu is to allow that discussion so the federation can move forward and close that chapter. There are real reasons why a federation ends up expelling hundreds of workers from its ranks or dismissing its General Secretary unfairly. Failing to deal with such issues doesn't unite, it divides further," he says.
