One person was killed and three others sustained critical injuries when their bakkie crashed into a wall on Main Reef Road in Crown Mines early on Sunday morning, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.

At about 6am paramedics from ER24 and the City of Johannesburg emergency medical service (EMS) arrived on the scene where they found a bakkie near a damaged wall of a building several metres away from the road.

It was believed that the bakkie hit the pavement on the side of the road and crashed into the wall of the building, he said.

“Paramedics found the three critically injured patients lying near the damaged vehicle.

A woman, believed to be in her 30s, was found with fatal injuries still trapped in the vehicle.

“While paramedics were assessing the patients they noticed that the patients had several items of clothes removed from their bodies. Upon enquiry they were informed that a group of bystanders arrived on the scene moments after the crash and apparently stole all their personal belongings, including their clothes and shoes. The injured also stated that the bystanders went through the damaged vehicle and took several items,” he said.

The injured men sustained several fractures and were stabilised on the scene before they were transported to a nearby hospital for further care. Fire fighters had to use rescue tools to free the woman from the wreckage.

The cause of the accident was not yet known and police were investigations, Vermaak said.
