The ANC Caucus in the North West Provincial Legislature has expressed concern over "what appears to be the use of excessive force by some members of the legislature security personnel."

Their statement came after videos circulated on social media on Friday showing two EFF MP's being hit in the face as they were escorted out of the provincial legislature.

EFF leader, Julius Malema's Twitter feed was flooded by videos of the incident which emerged in the wake of the State of the Province Address (SOPA) by Premier Job Mokgoro.

The EFF's Vuyani Pambo was not immediately able to comment on the issue.

However, the ANC said in a statement: “We wish to condemn in the strongest terms possible violence on the legislature precinct and call on the Secretary of the legislature to investigate allegations of unwarranted and excessive force as it diminishes the image of the institution.

ANC Chief Whip in the North West legislature, Paul Sebegoe said legislature staff must at all material times respect elected public representatives "and where the line for professional conduct appears to have been crossed, appropriate disciplinary action must be taken."

“Images of members of the legislature in a brawl with staff members and being thrown against walls do not bode well for our fledgling democracy which is supposed to be characterised by tolerance as it is supposed to be a platform for dialogue, the battle of ideas and not brute force,” he said.
