Scores of Kagiso residents took to the streets - claiming police are turning a blind eye to crime in the community.

Police vehicles have been damaged, houses torched and a police station set alight.

A flyer calling for a "Mogale City Monday shutdown" was distributed on Sunday and urged residents to "unite and reclaim our city from crime, drugs and human trafficking".

Police also fired rubber bullets and stun grenades at a crowd of people who threatened to march into town.

"Police are protecting them, more than the South Africans," one of the protesting residents told the media.
