Vigilance urged amid rise in ‘blue light’ crimes in Gauteng

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has cautioned motorists to be extra vigilant when approached by vehicles using blue lights during the festive season.
The warning comes amid an increase in criminals impersonating law enforcement officers.
The province launched its festive season road safety campaign in Johannesburg on Thursday,
Spokesperson Lesiba Mpyaa Mpyaa said crime syndicates are now using fake licence plates and vehicles fitted with blue lights and police markings.
He advised motorists to stop only in areas where they feel safe and can correctly identify legitimate officers.
“Motorists must remain alert, and pedestrians should make themselves visible, especially at night, because most fatalities occur after 9 pm,” Mpyaa said.
He added that the province will intensify visible policing and increase the number of roadblocks to ensure driver and vehicle fitness throughout the holiday period.
The launch focused on motorist behaviour, pedestrian safety, and improving road safety education.
“These awareness programmes will help strengthen road responsibility and promote safer behaviour for both motorists and pedestrians,” Mpyaa noted.
He also pleaded with pedestrians to use designated pedestrian bridges, saying many continue to cross busy roads despite the government providing safer alternatives.
“There will be increased policing visibility across the province to enhance safety for all road users.”
