Voters lost trust in ANC due to ‘self-serving careerists’, says Radebe

The ANC’s head of policy Jeff Radebe says the party continues to lose electoral support due to some members putting their interests above the needs of South Africans.
Radebe was leading the release of the discussion papers for the upcoming policy conference scheduled to be held in July this year.
The launch was held at the ANC's Luthuli House headquarters on Friday.
Some of the major issues to be discussed at the conference include the ANC’s renewal, land ownership, levels of corruption and the state of healthcare and education.
The ANC dropped to below 50% of the national vote and lost power in the three Gauteng metros in the previous local elections.
He says the levels of trust in the ANC have dropped substantially due to members serving their own selfish interests.
Radebe says drop in trust should serve as a warning in the runup to the national elections.
“Organisational renewal of the ANC is pivotal for the future of the ANC and our country, the 54th ANC National Conference resolved that the organisational renewal is an absolute priority for the survival of our great movement.
“Moving from being a liberation movement, to moving to the seat of power of government has attracted all kind of careerists, many who are there for their own selfish interests and an ANC name only.”
He added: “Being in government has come with many negative elements, ranging from gatekeeping influence of money politics and in elections, swelling of ranks by careerists and opportunists, putting the interest of individuals ahead of organisation and our society.
“Growing levels of maleficence and corruption, poor service delivery distant, out of touch inward looking ANC, decreasing level of trust and credibility in the ANC – all these factors and unsavoury elements resulted in ANC losing support including in the recent local government elections.”
