WATCH: 2.4 metre-long black mamba rescued on busy Durban beach
Marine biologists say a black mamba rescued from Durban’s Addington Beach on Tuesday could’ve made its way to shore through canals and rivers that run into the harbour.
The 2.47 metre-long snake was exhausted and remained calm during the trip to Ushaka Marine World, where a doctor assessed her condition.
The SA Association of Marine Biological Research says it had expected a call after a large snake was spotted on South Pier recently.
"The snake was so exhausted that when we approached her she hardly even noticed us,” says SAAMBR herpetologists Craig Smith.
"She was so easy to handle and thankfully remained calm whilst we transported her back to Ushaka Sea World where our resident veterinarian, Dr Francois Lampen was standing by to assess her condition.”
The mamba will remain at Ushaka until she’s declared fit for reintroduction into a suitable habitat.
