[WATCH] Crash closes N1 between Sandton and Midrand
Traffic on the N1 north was gridlocked on Friday afternoon following an crash involving two vehicles and a gas tanker.
The road was completely closed off between the Buccleuch interchange and Allandale Road.
Metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla says only slight injuries were reported.
"JMPD officers and Emergency services are on scene.
"All routes heading towards the scene have been closed off for safety purposes," Fihla adds.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area.
"Vehicles are being diverted on the N1 north at Rivonia Road, the N1 south at Allandale Road, the N3 north at Marlboro Drive and the M1 north at Woodmead Drive."
The situation turned rowdy when motorists demanded the opening of at least one of the lanes.
