Mbalula visited the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the National Traffic Control Centre in Midrand on Tuesday to observe its state of readiness for the festive season.

Acting manager at the control centre Sipho Langa says footage captured by the road cameras also assists the law enforcement in identifying and investigating criminal activities on the freeway.
"We have a lot of law enforcement agencies asking if the traffic management centre has footage of crimes that have been reported to have happened on the roads and we have assisted them in successful investigations.”

Mbalula says deaths on the roads are mostly as a result of motorists not following basic rules.
"We need to ensure that simple things happen for your safety, people lose their lives because they do not buckle up. Once you are in the car and travelling long distance fasten your safety belt because accidents happen at any time. Dont drink and drive because it affects your visibility and concentration.”
