WATCH: Five officers arrested in Vereeniging for drug possession
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
Five police officers were arrested in Vereeniging on Friday during a raid led by Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko and Emfuleni MMC for Public Safety Ndade Mokoena.
The officers were found crystal meth and number plates after commuters flagged illegal activity at a local taxi rank.
Emfuleni spokesperson Lebo Mofokeng said the raids form part of a cleaner city initiative.
“The MEC has been on this trail for two weeks now, starting with schools where dangerous weapons were found.
“Today that is when they had the bigger drug bust in Vereeniging.
Mofokeng added law enforcement will continue to engage with communities to root out the rot.
“I’m sure law enforcement agencies will be able to take the matter forward and we are hoping that these illegal activities happening in our towns will be arrested.
“Under the theme ‘clean our city’ it’s not just sweeping but it’s also looking at the illegal activities happening in our cities,” said Mofokeng.
The group are expected to appear in court soon.
