DA federal council chair Helen Zille was dragged out of a voting station at Sherwood Primary School in Eastern Cape on Monday.

Spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Grace Langa says it's alleged that Zille was campaigning at the voting site.

"It is reported that Zille was seen talking to people around the voting station, and one of the people there reported her to the presiding officer alleging that Zille is campaigning at the centre.
"The presiding officer allegedly requested that she should stop and be removed from the area."
Langa says the officer acted after the request.
"That's when the police officers approached her, pushed her out and took her phone. It’s alleged the same phone that was taken by the police which was used to take the video, belongs to Zille."
Langa has confirmed that a case of assault has been opened, although Zille is yet to be reached by the investigating officers.
"We are yet to interview Mrs Zille in order to hear her side of the story."
