WATCH: Outrage over Shell's R500 000 charity move
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
South Africans have taken to Twitter to express outrage at the decision by Shell to donate R500 000 to a charity chosen by Cape Town petrol attendant Nkosikho Mbele.
Mbele received at least R450 000 in donations after he helped stranded motorist Monet van Deventer with R100 for petrol Cape Town last week.
Van Deventer had left her bank card at home.
She later took to social media thanking Mbele for his kindness and started a BackaBuddy account for him.
Mbele received a call from the company's chairman, Hloniphizwe Mtolo, to deliver the news and inform him that he will be nominated to represent South Africa the Shell Service Excellence awards in 2020.
A shocked Mbele thanked Mtolo.
However, some have taken to Twitter to express their dissatisfaction.
This is PR en Marketing for shell.. 🤔Charity begins at home, thy should give him the 500k then another 500k to the charity of his choice then u can salute them.

I agree with you..why not give him shares?? Why wait for him to do kind and donate money to the charity..so if people were not touched by this shell would've still not recognize him

Shell must just do right by this man
So Shell couldn’t take #nkosikhombele to school or a program or something! Did they even ask him what he needs?
