Updated | By Makhosazane Twala
A passer-by had to be rushed to hospital after being struck by a stray bullet during a shootout between armed robbers and private security in Melville.
The gang of armed men opened fire on the security officer shortly after they hit a local pharmacy.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says the suspects entered the store pretending to be customers.
“They then robbed the employees at gunpoints, taking their cell phones and cash. The private security officer responded to a business robbery in progress. As he was approaching, the suspects started shooting at him and a shootout ensued.
Masondo says one of the bullets struck a member of the public.
“A passenger of a truck that was passing by was hit by a stray bullet and rushed to the nearest hospital for medical treatment.”
No arrests have been made.
