[WATCH] ‘Pravin must go now' - EFF threatens to disrupt SONA if Gordhan not fired

There are growing calls for President Cyril Ramaphosa to sack Public Enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan following a spate of rolling blackouts since the start of the year.

Both Gordhan and former Eskom board chairman Jabu Mabuza came under fire over allegations that they misled Ramaphosa.

In December, the Eskom board vowed that there would be no rolling blackouts until January 13, a promise repeated by the president.

However, the dreaded blackouts returned ahead of schedule.

Mabuza resigned on Friday.

Businessman Mabuza resigned as a member and chairman of the embattled Eskom board on Friday. In a statement released by the Presidency, Mabuza addressed the controversy around allegations that President Cyril Ramaphosa was misled by the board on the power utility's ability to keep the lights on during December and January.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has now threatened to disrupt Ramaphosa’s State Of The Nation Address in February if the president does not heed to the calls to remove Gordhan.

EFF leader Julius Malema made the remarks on Sunday at a rally in the North West town of Schweizer Reneke, ahead of a by-election in the Mamusa municipality.

"I want to tell Cyril Ramaphosa today that if he can't fire Pravin before the State of the Nation Address, the State of the Nation Address shall be about Pravin," Malema said.

"We will stand up there. We will stop him from speaking. We will tell him you must fire Pravin because we must protect South Africa’s assets."

Malema added that there would be no compromise on the matter of failing state-owned enterprises.

"Pravin must go and Pravin must go now," he reiterated.

"If Ramaphosa is not prepared to protect our assets by firing Pravin then Ramaphosa must go."
