Well-known soccer official arrested for speeding

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has branded as unacceptable the conduct of a popular soccer official after he was caught speeding in Mbombela at the weekend.

RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said the 68-year-old is linked to one of the country’s top soccer teams.

''He was speeding at 175 km/h in a 120km zone. Such conduct from a senior official is totally unacceptable particularly when considering the high number of soccer players who die on the roads every year."

Zwane said society expects better from the public figures, considering the number of deaths on the country’s roads each year.

''South Africans are urged to stop making excuses and change their attitudes to road safety to reduce road accidents during this festive season. The RTMC commends traffic officers to enforcing the law against this official without showing him any favour. Traffic officers are called upon to be strict in enforcing road rules and accept no excuses from those who break the rules irrespective of their social status.”

The official has been released on bail and is expected to appear in court this week.
