Western Cape cops in court for stealing booze

Seven Western Cape police officers are expected to appear in court again in June in connection with the theft of alcohol.

The officers, stationed in Bonnievale, allegedly robbed a liquor store at the weekend.

 

They were arrested on Monday and appeared in the Swellendam Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

 

They have been charged with defeating the ends of justice, theft,  unauthorised use of a motor vehicle, dealing in liquor and contravening Disaster Management Regulations.

The National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) spokesperson in the Western Cape Eric Ntabazalila says the five constables and two sergeants were released on R5000 bail each.

"Seven police officers also appeared in court yesterday on several charges which include defeating the ends of justice, theft, unauthorised use of a motor vehicle, dealing in liquor and contravention of the Disaster Management Regulations.

 

"The accused were released on bail of R5 000 bail each, which they paid.”

 

They are expected back in court in June.

 

"I can confirm that the accused will return to court in June as the matter has been postponed for further investigation," says Ntabazalila.
