Widespread support for new Finance Minister Mboweni
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Political parties and civil organisations have welcomed the appointment of Tito Mboweni as the country's latest Finance Minister.
Former Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, Tito Mboweni, is back - steering the country's most crucial portfolio.
Mboweni took his oath of office on Tuesday afternoon, after Nhlhanhla Nene resigned following controversy over his multiple meetings with the controversial Gupta family.
Several political parties and civil organisations have welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) congratulated Mboweni, but expressed their dismay at his "looney posting content" on social media which it believes to be in contravention of government's policies.
The United Democratic Movement (UDM)'s Bantu Holomisa welcomed the fall of Nene, calling it long overdue.
Pressure was mounting against Nene to vacate his office after claims that he used his power to score contracts for his son at the Public Investment Corporation (PIC).
"We ask now for the President and new minister to start an inquiry into the PIC. They have been delaying and delaying and coming up with feeble excuses," says Holomisa.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) commended Ramaphosa, but has requested that ministers in his cabinet embroiled in controversy, now also be shown the door.
"Ramaphosa must apply the same consistency with other ministers who continue to serve in his cabinet like Malusi Gigaba, Nomvula Mokonyane, and Bathabile Dlamini," says the party's Floyd Shivambu.
The country's largest public servant's union, the Public Servants Association (PSA) says Ramaphosa's decision to relieve Nene of his duties should "send shivers to all the remaining Gupta linked Ministers in cabinet".
"The PSA therefore calls upon all state officials associated with the Gupta family to do the right thing and follow the footsteps of Nene," says spokesperson, Tahir Maepa.
