Winde hopes remaining Covid-19 restrictions are scrapped

The Western Cape provincial government says it will present reasons why the remaining Covid-19 restrictions should be scrapped.
President Cryil Ramaphosa will on Wednesday convene the President’s Coordinating Council (PCC) that will be attended by ministers, premiers and mayors.
Premier Alan Winde says that the Western Cape wants to see the removal of all remaining restrictions, including the wearing of masks.
“Finally we may now see an end to all Covid-19 curbs, as I have consistently called for. But it has to be emphasised, it is disappointing that it has taken so long.

“We want to see a removal of the remaining restrictions immediately, as our data clearly indicates that it is no longer required to protect our healthcare system. This includes the removal of all restrictions on gatherings, as well as the removal of the mask mandate. It is now up to individuals to demonstrate personal responsibility by using all the knowledge that we have learnt over the last two years.”
On Monday a government memo was leaked on social media suggesting that Health Minister Joe Phaahla has written to Health MECs on the possible dropping of masks in public spaces.
The memo also alluded to the fact that the ban on gatherings and removal of restrictions on travellers entering the country would also be lifted.
However, the Health Department has remained mum on the reports.
