Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Gauteng has suspended this year’s winter initiation season due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Gauteng Initiation Task Team chairperson Prince George Mahlangu says the traditional authorities of Amandebele Ba Lebelo and Amandebele Ndzundza Sokhulumi decided to suspend initiations after extensive consultations.
“All the stakeholders in each region, having considered all inputs, unanimously decided to suspend the 2021 winter initiation season. The primary reason for the decision by all stakeholders was the devastating impact of the Covid-19 second wave in our communities.

“Many stakeholders felt that we should wait for the vaccination rollout to take effect.”
Since the beginning of phase one of the vaccination rollout, approximately 290 000 health workers have been vaccinated through the Sisonke progamme.
Phase two of the vaccine rollout program is expected to run from May until December.
This phase will see the most vulnerable groups being vaccinated with Johnson and Johnson and Pfizer jabs.
