Nine people died after a minibus taxi crashed into an overturned truck trailer.

Six other students were transported to hospital with minor injuries.

The students were travelling to Johannesburg after attending a Zion Christian Church prayer event in Limpopo.

Wits SRC Secretary General Fasiha Hassan said the purpose of the event was for students and staff to begin the process of mourning and grief.

"It's not a formal memorial service but merely a commemorate event for students and staff to be together and mourn" she said.

Students marched from Wits' education campus in Parktown to the Wits main campus singing songs of comfort and holding placards in memory of the seven students.

Hassan says the mood on the Wits' campuses was sombre and students were still in shock.

"It's not normal for one day to have seven young lives who are reaching their potential and they next day to have them all gone at once", she said.

Hassan said the police and families were still in the process of identifying the deceased and personal details would be released soon.
