The students are unable to study due to the lack of National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding.
SRC president Mcebo Dlamini on Wednesday said they decided to raise funds after protests failed to bear fruit.
"The university was getting close to its deadline of deregistering these students. We had no other alternative to raise money to at least register these students," he said.
The campaign "One Million, One Month" was launched in February under a humanitarian fund started by the SRC in 2010.
Dlamini explains how the money was raised and how they will further engage other stakeholders to offer accommodation and food....
Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande, told Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Higher Education on Wednesday that one of the challenges his department faces is the shortage of NSFAS funding, leading to student protests across the country.
He said despite this, NSFAS funding has been increased to R9.5 billion for the 2015/2016 academic year, from R8.2 billion last year.
