Police in Gqeberha have arrested a 25-year-old woman who allegedly murdered her boyfriend's 9-year-old daughter at Maitland Beach on Monday.
Spokesperson Priscilla Naidu says the suspect is believed to have fetched the child from her partner’s home in Bethelsdorp to take her for a haircut.
She says the woman, together with little Quinisha Sebrand, then hiked to the beach.
Naidu says the child swam in the ocean before she was strangled and left on the beach.
The suspect subsequently went to the satellite police station in Seaview the same evening to report the incident.
The child's body was found on Maitland Beach.
The woman was detained on a charge of murder and is set to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
The motive for the killing is not yet known.
