Work on incomplete R511 to continue
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC, Ismail Vadi, says work on R511 between Fourways and Diepsloot will get underway soon.
Vadi was conducting a site visit on road projects along the R511, including the Mnandi and Olifantsfontien intersection.
The R511 project was scheduled for completion in October 2017. However, Vadi says they encountered problems with the contractor, Lubbe Construction.
"We have experienced serious problems with the contractor, he was applied for business rescue so there are financial difficulties that he is experiencing. That matter will be heard in court I hope sooner rather than later," says Vadi.
On the Mnandi and Summit road intersection, Vadi says short-term safety measures will be installed over the next couple of days.
Earlier this month, Laezonia residents in Centurion took to the streets over road deaths at the intersection.
"We are installing rumble strips on Olifantsfontein road leading to that intersection to alert motorists and discourage speeding, we are reducing the speed limit from 100km/h to 80km/hr, cutting grass to improve visibility and other measures," says Vadi.
Vadi called on the public to obey the rules of the road while the department steps up efforts to improve safety.
