Workers down tools at Medupi

Operations at Eskom's Medupi power station in Limpopo were brought to a grinding halt on Wednesday after some 21 000 workers downed tools.

The National Union of Metalworkers' Steve Nhlapo says workers are tired of Eskom evicting black workers from their residences.

"The company is evicting black artisans and moving them to hostels. No white worker has been evicted", he says.

Nhlapo says Eskom is also retrenching workers.

"Instead of giving workers bonuses for the work they have completed, Eskom is retrenching workers."

Numsa handed over a memorandum of demands to Eskom and says if there is no response after 24 hours they will embark on a full-blown strike.

Meanwhile, the Eskom board is reportedly expected to hold a meeting today to decide the fate of Eskom chairperson Zola Tsotsi.

Tsotsi has been accused of interfering with the executive and signing off important documents, thereby undermining the CEO and other executives.

Two weeks ago Eskom announced the suspension of its CEO, Tshediso Matona, and other four executives while an independent inquiry to investigate the problems at Eskom gets underway.

Matona has reportedly approached the Labour Court saying his suspension contravenes the Labour Act since it was without a fair reason.

Eskom could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.
